Lending a Helping Hand to USAID/Mali on Monitoring and Evaluation
With enormous security and developmental challenges, Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. With a population of nearly 18.5 million, just over half the population lives in extreme poverty on less than $1.25/day.
USAID/Mali’s current strategy emphasizes governance and resilience across four key objectives: transition, governance, resilience and prosperity. The Mission’s broad portfolio includes programming in health, economic growth, peacebuilding, democracy and governance, and education.
In this complex and difficult environment, we are supporting USAID’s work to improve the lives of Malians by providing a suite of demand-driven monitoring, evaluation and analytical services as part of the Mali M&E Platform project. These services provide the evidence base for important programming decisions across a $600 million portfolio.
In addition to designing and implementing evaluations that help determine the factors that contribute to a project’s success or failure, we also help USAID monitor its numerous projects in areas that are inaccessible to USAID staff, thus providing an important proxy for face-to-face oversight.
Recent examples of evaluations include a multi-sector evaluation of USAID/Mali’s integrated health, nutrition and water and sanitation (WASH) activity, as well as a mid-term evaluation of the cereal value chain activity. We also recently completed a rapid assessment of one of the Mission’s peace, democracy and governance activities.
We also provide training on monitoring and evaluation to USAID staff and partners so that they design metrics of success that are achievable, measurable, and transparent.
Finally, we help ensure that USAID’s partners are collecting data that are valid, coherent, precise, reliable, and timely.
