Building a 21st Century Health Care Cadre

Our work with USAID’s Bureau for Global Health has contributed to the Agency’s ability to deliver health care services worldwide
USAID’s Bureau for Global Health is widely considered to be a leader in the global health sector – working to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS, reduce maternal and childhood deaths and fight infectious diseases worldwide. To support and sustain the effectiveness of the Agency’s current and future health programs, it must address its immediate and emerging human capital needs. We are working with the Public Health Institute to implement the Global Health Fellows Program II (GHFP-II).

Since 2006, the program has recruited junior- to senior-level health professionals to work for USAID and support their performance during the fellowship. We continue to support the professional and career development of participants, including a coaching program, through which fellows meet one-on-one with performance coaches to support their work and professional growth.

We have also developed e-learning modules, an onboarding and orientation program, designed and delivered training and facilitated retreats and workshops. The program has also supported fellowship and internship programs for Foreign Service National staff.

Our learning approach led to the analysis of support received by fellows overseas and provided recommendations on ways to strengthen that support.

As a result of the program, the number of highly qualified health professionals working with USAID has increased, allowing USAID to maximize results and strengthen its leadership role in global health. We have also helped USAID to navigate change and sustain an environment where staff can excel.
